Ever After- The Movie heading to Broadway

Ever After- The Movie heading to Broadway

Last night I finally watched the movie, Ever After, feating the amazing actress Drew Barrymore. I loved it. Although it is almost 2 decades old, I felt that it really captured the story plot of Cinderella nicely.

However, according to a reliable source, I have learned that this almost 3 hour long movie is coming soon to Broadway. And in my eyes it is a HUGE MISTAKE! This is not because I do not like the idea, oh no actually the opposite; I love the idea! BUT with Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella currently on Broadway, I feel that Ever After will not get the response that it so deserves because most theatre goers will think that they are just trying to replace the Cinderella story currently on Broadway. The two are very similar in story plots, but their story lines couldn’t be more different. After seeing the film, I feel that the sets in the film will be way to large for a Broadway stage. Even the world famous Radio City Music Hall’s stage would be too small for this large set production.

Another problem I have with this going to Broadway is that this version of Cinderella isn’t a musical. Which in my eyes is a blessing, but at the same time, when people think of Cinderella, they think of musicals. And as most theatre goers know, 9 times out of 10, when a play version of a movie goes to Broadway, it gets a musical facelift, if you will.

So in conclusion, will this show make it to Broadway, yes. Will is stay long on Broadway, no. I think that this show would do much better in Europe because of it’s rural setting, and they have bigger stages there.
